“I ain’t ridin’ no waves…too busy making my own waves baby!”
The Kid Cudi that we all know and love is finally back, and along with him came a few new tracks and music videos. Cudi released the video to the his track Frequency, which will be on the delayed album Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’, which was originally set to be released in early October. Cudi followed up his Frequency video, with visuals for his second single off of the album, Surfin’, which was released on Halloween, last Monday. Before the release of the two music videos, Cudi had a recent fallout with one of his long time collaboration partners, Kanye West, and eventually with the well known Toronto rapper/singer, Drake. The track Surfin’ is thought to be a “diss” track to Kanye West. After the antics, Cudi decided to address his mental illness and his decision to take action on bettering himself publicly via Facebook. He admitted to being in a deep depression, which resulted in Cudi checking himself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges.Cudi fans from all over the globe (including myself) have sent their support and prayers out to Scott Mescudi [Kid Cudi] during his time of need. Here’s what some had to say:
Cudi then, responded to his fans earlier in October:Almost a month later, Cudi released his music video to Surfin’, which features Pharrell Willams as it’s producer. Pharrell, known to spread peace and love wherever he goes, was the perfect person to collab with Cudi on this project. Not only does the track itself have a great production team, but the music video is just as amazing. Cudi was surrounded by loads of familiar faces including A$AP Rocky, A$AP Nast, Jaden and Willow Smith along with many others. The video reflected freedom and happiness, which is the exact place Cudi needs to be after his breakdown.
My favorite part of the track Surfin’ is definitely the instruments. The drums and the horns are so captivating, making the urge to dance almost irresistible. The song itself puts me in an amazing mood, but the video is an exact visual to that emotion. What could be better than being surrounded by good vibes and amazing people? Cudi did a great job directing this video. Yes… he directed it himself!
Over the years, Kid Cudi has blessed us with many amazing albums and mixtapes. Cudi has been making an impact on lives, including mine, since 2008. He has made music from the heart, which has helped people get by during their dark times, giving them light and reason to keep moving forward. Not only has he impacted the youth, but he has changed the rap game, bringing his unique style and genre of alternative rap into the hip hop and trap game.
Kid Cudi’s upcoming album Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ was originally set to release in October of 2016. The album has been pushed back considering Cudi’s current condition, but I am more than willing to wait on it, especially if that means Cudi taking time to mentally heal himself first. I am definitely looking forward to the release of Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’, along with a happy and healthy Kid Cudi. We love you Cudi, stay strong.
