Sometimes you need a little tip…. and Nahsym Kalif delivers just that with his latest track “Gratuity.”

In the Gratuity music video, Kalif can be spotted wearing the apron of a waiter, which is considered a working class job. He delivers a word of advice for anyone striving to reach their goals. Ironic enough, he, as the waiter, is the one giving the people a “tip.”

I thought that the visuals of the music video were quite clever, but what I found to be even better than the idea behind the video, was Kalif’s track itself. He passes on his words of true wisdom over a very mellow jazz tone that you can nod to. Kalif spits about life, wealth and all of the hard work it takes to get there.

If I could describe Nahsym Kalif, I would say he’s the perfect balance of a neo-soul lyricist mixed with both new age and old school rap. I can say Kalif is pretty clever for his age and his sound stands out in this new era of rap because he preserves the sound of hip hop through his music. It’s clear his music is influenced by Lupe Fiasco, Andre 3000 and Mos Def along with many others. I can say that Nahsym Kalif is a bit ahead of his time, but his talents are exactly what we need in the music industry these day.

What makes Nahsym Kalif different in today’s rap industry?

“My melodic soulful tunes provides insight and wisdom to the new generation. I’m inspired by Neo-Jazz and Afro-Funk. My music embodies creative independence and ingenuity.”
