“Shake it like a Polaroid picture!!” Let’s take it back to 2003 when Outkast dropped one of their greatest albums, SpeakerBoxxx/ The Love Below. The album was originally released on September 23, 2003.
SpeakerBoxxx/ The Love Below consisted of a whopping 39 tracks. The project was basically two separate albums, one by Big Boi and one by Andre 3000, merged into one SUPER album. Half of the album focused on Big Boi’s southern hiphop rap style, while the other half focused on Andre 3000’s mixed sound of jazz, funk, psychedelic, and pop.
The SpeakerBoxxx section of the album consisted of 19 songs written by Big Boi, with credits to a few others. Big Boi kept his classic Atlanta rap style going, all throughout his half of the album. Speakerboxxx featured artists such as Andre 3000 (of course), Jazzy Pha, Sleepy Brown, Killer Mike, Ludacris, Big Gipp, Konkrete, Ceelo Green, Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz and many others. Some featured producers include Cutmaster Swift, Mr DJ, Carl Mo and Andre 3000.
The Love Below section of the album consisted of 20 tracks that were single handedly produced by Andre 3000 himself, except for the track “Roses,” which was produced by Dojo5. There were three vocal features on The Love Below which included Rosario Dawson, Kelis, and Norah Jones.
There were 2 singles from each half of the album, four in total, which included “The Way You Move” and Ghetto Muzik/ Prototype from Speakerboxxx, and “Hey Ya!” and “Roses” from The Love Below.
The album was great all together but my favorite things about SpeakerBoxxx/The Love Below is that it gave Big Boi and Andre 3000 the chance to shine and show their skills individually, while remaining a dynamic duo. What a memorable project from these hip hop legends!
