Run That Back: Electric Relaxation – A Tribe Called Quest

“Relax yourself girl, he’s a player.” …Everyone knows The Tribe……A Tribe Called Quest that is. A Tribe Called Quest is a hip hop group that formed back in 1985. The group originally contained four members that included, the founder, Q-Tip, co-founder, Phife Dawg, DJ and producer, Ali Shaheed Muhammed, and MC, Jacobi White (who left the group in 1991 after the release of their first album).

Electric Relaxation was a single off of the Tribe’s album ‘Midnight Marauders,’ which released on Nov. 9, 1993. Midnight Marauders was the Tribe’s third album, that followed their first album “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm,” and their second album, “The Low End Theory.”

Midnight Marauders featured three singles which included “Award Tour,” “Oh My God,” and of course “Electric Relaxation.” “Electric Relaxation” was released as a single on Dec. 19, 1993. The track featured a sample of “Mystic Brew” by Ronnie Foster. Electric Relaxation was also featured in the opening theme song of the television sitcom “The Wayans Bros” on WB back in the 90’s.

I would like to take the time to honor the late great Malik Taylor, also known as Phife Dawg, co founder of A Tribe Called Quest, whom we lost to health complications this past Tuesday. I’d like to send my deepest condolences to Malik’s family, friends, and fans who are all grieving the loss of the rap legend. Rest In Peace Phife Dawg, and for the Tribe, I’d like to Run that back. Electric Relaxation.
